Tech community evolves every day at a speed much faster than we think. And so are tech products. Top brands like Apple, Huawei, Oneplus and Samsung dominate the smartphone industry by launching new phones every year, but in the case of brands like Oneplus, they bring in new devices at a gap of every six months. Going by this trend people are tempted by the fact that they want a new device every year even though their current device might just be a year old or less than a year old and is also running fine. I think that is not necessary and I believe that your current smartphone can serve you well for at least 2 years or even more depending on the condition of the device. Here is my take why you should not upgrade your phones every year.
Helps save money
By purchasing a phone every year we tend to spend a lot more money than we had spent on our previous phone. By saving this money you could use this money for some other better solutions, new gadgets or even spend this money to buy a new phone when your current daily driver goes crazy.
Helps reduce E-Waste
After purchasing a new phone, most of us get rid of the old device. That is natural. But by doing this every year, we increase the amount of E-Waste generated. Though there are ways to recycle, reducing waste generation is better
The ‘Performance’ Factor
New phones launching every year comes with a new SOC that is improved and much better than the previous one. But in day to day usage you might see that the chipset runs similar to the previous one that you might have used a year before. Hence we arrive at the first factor, money. Spending your hard earned money on a new device that runs similar to your old device is a waste of money and in fact it seems that you are spending money on a similar device that you are currently using.
Not that you should not upgrade, but consider only if your current device poses some issue.
Consider upgrading only if your phone doesn’t match your current requirements or poses some other issues like battery deterioration over time, overheating, etc. By this not only you save money but also you will help in reducing E-Waste.
